Dr. Ingo Simonis ist Director of Interoperability Programs and Science beim Open Geospatial Consortium, OGC. Zu seinem Aufgabenbereich gehört die Organisation und Leitung von IT-Projekten sowie deren Unterstützung als Softwarearchitekt. Dr. Ingo Simonis wissenschaftliche Arbeiten konzentrieren sich auf die Integration und Analyse von heterogenen raum-zeitlichen Datenstrukturen. Ziel ist es, Daten von unterschiedlichen Quellen semantisch korrekt zu bearbeiten. Hierbei kommen Konzepte und Ansätze aus den Bereichen „Big Data“ und „Linked Data“, Ontologien, „Cloud Computing“, „Knowledge Engineering“, Webdienste, "crowd sourcing" und verteilter Systeme zur Anwendung. Die entwickelten Technologien und Konzepte werden in verschiedenen Bereichen eingesetzt, etwa der Choleraforschung, der Klimaforschung, dem Luftverkehr oder dem Umweltmonitoring.
Nach seinem Studium der Landschaftsökologie an den Universitäten Münster und Joensuu, Finnland, baute Ingo Simonis am Institut für Geoinformatik von 2001 bis 2006 die Forschungsgruppe „Sensor Web“ auf. Diese beschäftigte sich inhaltlich mit der Integration von Sensoren und heterogenen Datensätzen in IT-Infrastrukturen. Aus diesen Arbeiten gingen zahlreiche Spezifikationen im Rahmen des weltweit führenden Standardisierungsgremiums für Raum-Zeit-orientierte Datendienste, OGC, hervor. Von Beginn an arbeitet er an der OGC Initiative Sensor Web mit und ist derzeit Autor von vier OGC Spezifikationen. Nach seiner Promotion Anfang 2006 blieb er noch ein Jahr am Institut für Geoinformatik der Universität Münster, bevor er sich als freier Wissenschaftler und Berater selbständig machte. Er ist Mitbegründer der internationalen Open Source Initiative 52°North, der führenden Initiative bei der Entwicklung von Webdiensten, Protokollen und Datenmodellen im Rahmen des Sensor Web. Als ausgewiesener Experte verteilter webbasierter Systeme unterstützt er eine Vielzahl von technischen Kommittees wissenschaftlicher Konferenzen, arbeitet als externer Experte für die Europäische Kommission und fungiert als wissenschaftlicher Berater, Lobbyist und Koordinator afrikanisch-europäischer Kooperationsprojekte beim Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, Südafrika. Ingo Simonis war leitender Architekt zahlreicher OGC testbed und GEOSS Aktivitäten und Mitglied des OGC IP Teams. Der akademischen Welt bleibt er durch die Übernahme von Lehrveranstaltungen verbunden. Derzeit lehrt er an der Fachhochschule Kärnten. 2009 gründete er zusammen mit dem Technical Director OGC Europe, Martin Klopfer, die International Geospatial Services Institute GmbH (iGSI), ein Unternehmen, dass sich darauf konzentriert Unternehmen bei der Entwicklung von Datenmodellen und dem Aufbau verteilter Systeme zu unterstützen. 2010 erhielt er für seine Dienste im Bereich Sensor Web den OGC Kenneth D. Gardels award.

Dr. Ingo Simonis is Director of Interoperability Programs and Science at the Open Geospatial Consortium, OGC. As Director, Dr. Ingo Simonis, who is based in Germany, is responsible for planning, managing and developing architectures for interoperability initiatives such as testbeds, pilots, and interoperability experiments. He is responsible for bringing the latest research outcomes into the OGC. His research focuses on the integration and analysis of complex data structures in the context of large scale sensor networks. The goal is the semantic correct integration and processing of heterogeneous data sets. The recent approaches use technologies and concepts from the disciplines "Big Data“, "Linked Data“, ontologies, „cloud computing“, „knowledge engineering“, Web services, "crowd sourcing", and distributed systems.
Simonis has a long history of working in the OGC process as a member, and he brings those years of experience to this role. Simonis has been a principal architect of OGC's Sensor Web Enablement (SWE) initiative. He was instrumental in the success of several research and development programs executed under the 7th European Commission framework program. He authored several OGC standards and has been a member of the OGC Interoperability Program Team. He has served as lead architect for OGC testbed threads. He has also served as lead architect for the GEOSS (Group on Earth Observation System of Systems) Architecture Application Integration Pilot activities, which are administered by the OGC on behalf of the GEO organization.
Simonis has led a broad range of international research and development projects and research groups. He co-founded the international open source initiative "52°North" and was the 52°North-Sensor Web community lead. In 2009, he founded with, Martin Klopfer (OGC Technical Director, Europe), the International Geospatial Services Institute, iGSI. While pursuing all of these activities, Ingo Simonis has also had a distinguished academic career in the fields of ecology and geoinformatics. Most recently he has worked at South Africa's Council for Scientific and Industrial Research and continues to lecture at Carinthia University in Geodata Information. His recent research has focused on the integration and analysis of complex data structures in the context of large-scale sensor networks.
In 2010, he received the OGC Kenneth D. Gardels award for the extraordinary contribution he has made throughout all phases of the design, development and market acceptance of the OGC Sensor Web Enablement (SWE) standards.
